WELCOME TO THE FIRST EDITION OF ITL NEWS AND THE NEW CHINESE YEAR OF THE TIGER!

As one of our valued clients we thought you might like to know more about us and the sort of work we get involved in, from education and immigration to police matters and health care!

So, we’ve decided to start up this newsletter so we can share information you might find useful and provide some cultural and language insights into the communities you live in but, just as importantly, we would also like to hear from you.

Tell us about the languages you speak, the communities you’re involved with, how languages help you at work or in your every day life….. you get the drift! Send us anything you think might be of interest to our readers from snippets of information to news stories and, don’t forget, this newsletter is going out to all our clients, interpreters and partners so you never know who might read something about you and what that might lead to!

To get us going, have a look at the special section we have included to welcome the new Chinese Year of the Tiger. Which animal were you born under? On the more serious side, we have also included up to date information on the current language trends used in our local communities.2010 The Year of the Tiger

These are very exciting times for ITL and we hope you’ll enjoy sharing them with us!

If you’d like to get in touch with our editor use the links at the bottom of this page and hopefully we’ll see you featured in our next edition!

Companies that are thriving in the recession

ITL Office Staff AMID the economic gloom, many small businesses in the region are not only surviving but thriving. Durham Business Club now wants to share some of these success stories with other business people to prove – and to inspire - that in 2009 as well as 2010 small companies can still succeed.

One such company - a rapidly growing Translation and Interpreting Company (ITL) - is enjoying the fruits of success as it celebrates its twentieth year in business by clinching its latest big contract win with Durham County Council.

On October 2009 ITL was officially included onto the NHS interpreting framework of suppliers. This includes Middlesbrough PCT, North and South Tees, Durham & Darlington, South Tyneside and Gateshead PCT.

The company based at Design Works in Felling spoke about its successful year so far at a meeting of Durham Business Club focusing on developing skills to be ‘world class’, which was headlined by top sports and business coach Simon Hartley. ITL kindly sponsored this event to thank the club for its support over the years.

Grace said: “These are very exciting contract wins for us and will really help to cement our position as the region’s premier interpreting and translation company. In these harsh economic times, it also means that we will be in a position to employ more people on a full-time basis. We are delighted that the company is doing so well, and hope we can prove that there are businesses out there that are doing well.”

Christine Yule, development director at Durham Business Club, said: “I have spoken to several businesses lately that seem to be bucking the trend by not only surviving but thriving in these tough times. Despite the gloomy outlook, there really are business success stories out there and I think it’s time we as a Club and as a region celebrated them more.”

Welcome the new Chinese Year of the Tiger

2010 Tiger

The Chinese Lunar New Year is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the zodiac. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on the cycles of the moon. The beginning of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February.

The Chinese Lunar Calendar names each of the twelve years after an animal that came to him before he departed from the earth and as a reward he named a year after each. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year you are born has a profound influence on personality, saying: "This is the animal that hides in your heart."

Interpreter Profile

Rahala Ahmed

Rahala Ahmed
How long have you been working for ITL?

For about six years.  Six happy years

What is your favourite thing about interpreting?

I really like meeting new people.  It is also good to know that in some way I am contributing to helping them solve a problem that they may be having.

And the worst thing?

Sometimes it is difficult to go to certain places that I may not have been to before.  It is nice to visit new places sometimes, but the familiar areas I am more comfortable with.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I like reading but most of all I enjoy socialising with people.  I would describe myself as a party person.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I feel that I would like to be more confident in some situations.
